IOANNINA
Ioannina is a city in Epirus, seat of the Municipality of Ioannina and capital of the Regional Unit of Ioannina. Also known as Giannina or Yiannina, it is one of the largest cities in Greece with a rich cultural tradition and modern development enterprises. Attractions in the city and the wider region include the Castle, the acropolis of Itz Kale, the Byzantine monasteries, museums, the cave of Perama, ancient Dodoni and the picturesque Zagorochoria.
Among the diverse geographical features of the region, the historic Lake Pamvotida has a special place. The lake belongs to the eutrophic lakes and functions as a refuge of life for both flora and fauna. The vegetation is the basis of life for the lake as it provides food and shelter for numerous organisms. It is mainly composed of mainly herbaceous and less aquatic species and its banks are covered with dense reed beds.
